5 K-Pop Random Play Dance Challenges from The J to Help You Through Quarantine

When it comes to K-pop Random Play Dance challenges, there are two YouTube accounts that dominate the competition: GoToe, who focuses more on coordinating challenges for the public to join, and The J, a channel that showcases covers and challenges from different dance teams.

While GoToe’s challenges are almost all free-for-all type challenges that he puts on in Korea or at various conventions around the world, The J’s challenges typically offer a little more control. Whether it’s splitting the participants into two groups or limiting it to just a few of their dance teams, it’s a little easier to appreciate individuals in The J’s videos.

For those who haven’t ever seen a Random Play Dance challenge before, the concept is simple enough. A mix of various K-pop choruses, both old and new, are stitched together and played out loud to a group of people. Everyone stands clear of the center and, if you know the dance, you run to the middle and perform.

Open Challenges

These are The J’s version of challenges that are open to the public. They often set them up to divide the crowd into two different-colored teams, which not only makes everything a little more visually interesting, but also helps control the amount of people dancing at one time. Given that most of these challenges don’t happen in huge spaces, splitting the group up is the best way to minimize the number of elbows to faces or accidental foot stompings.

Mission Challenges

If you’re looking for a Random Play Dance video that features a smaller group, but still has the “two teams” feel, the mission challenges are a great option. These usually showcase a few of The J’s dance teams facing off against each other to complete various missions that are set throughout the game. These challenges can be anything from needing a certain number of people to perform the dance to performing at twice or half speed. It’s a version of the challenge that feels a little more competitive, and is always sure to keep you on your toes.

Single-Team Challenges

If you want an even smaller group, the single-team challenges are just what you’re looking for. Most of the single-team challenges are done by KINGPIN while they’re in different countries, but it’s always fun to see how the people walking around them react to a handful of people suddenly dancing covers to various K-pop songs.

Online Challenges

Even during a pandemic, the Random Play Dance challenges didn’t stop. Instead, The J adapted the concept to still work while everyone was staying safe at home. The mix would get sent to participants, who would then start at the same time and record themselves. Then, all the individual videos were edited together to produce a video that still entertains.

CCN’s Endurance Challenges

In most of The J’s videos, you’ll probably notice a person that the YouTube comments like to call the “bucket hat guy”. A member of the KINGPIN group, CCN is probably the most easily identifiable on the channel, thanks to his signature headware. He’s also someone who seems to know the choreography for almost every song that gets played. So why not make a challenge where he has to perform every song in the mix, with others joining in when they can? If you have a hard time focusing on more than one person during these challenge videos, or just want to see one person do an hour-long version by themselves, the Ketchup Volumes are for you! He’s even done a BTS-only version (in both Korea and Prague) and a SM Entertainment-specific version in front of the Eiffel Tower.
